Docent Programs

This docent program was developed as a concept by the founding director and then organized and implemented by myself.

The docents are clients of the local adult homeless and at risk service center. When we began, only one of my docents knew what it meant to be a docent. Our initial training started at the beginning, where I explained what a docent was, what they would be doing, and what the museum was all about. From there we moved into a more standard training that focused on exhibition information. As new works are presented, follow up trainings are held, where I get to check in with the docents. Docent tours are worked out in practice sessions. Since I do not believe in giving scripts to docents, in addition to exhibition information, I provide them with the tools to create interpretive tours that are personal to them and visitors. Docents create their own tour that works to breakdown the stereotypes of homelessness with visitors through the works in the exhibition.
